Premiered by the University of North Carolina School of the Arts Symphony orchestra on February 18, 2012. This piece was the winner of the 2012 Mary Starling Composition Competition, subsequently resulting in 4 performances by the Winston-Salem Symphony, March 6-7, 2012.

Winner of the 2012 Mary Starling Composition Competition sponsored by the Winston-Salem (North Carolina) Symphony, this composition opens with a haunting pianissimo passage and gradually builds to a fiery ending. Performers can work on lyrical playing, clean rhythm, crisp articulation, and energy level. The wide spectrum of characters leads to an exciting listening and playing experience. Percussion requirements include snare drum, bass drum, pitched toms, glockenspiel, xylophone, suspended cymbal, crash cymbals, and bass drum. Bowings are included but fingerings are not. Some high passagework demands creative fingerings. -S.G.

This original composition first fell upon the ears of excited, rambunctious, elementary-aged children as part of an educational concert series geared toward teaching the sections of the orchestra. The room quickly grew silent and the audience was captivated by the haunting melodies and clashes of bold chords, intertwined with moments of tranquility and wonder. Each and every section of the orchestra will feel equally important as it tackles this challenging, yet appealing piece!
