New Birth - cello, string bass, and orchestra
New Birth was originally a cello and string bass duet, written for the duo “Low and Lower” as part of an in-studio composition competition at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. The title comes from the celebration of the birth of my son, Liam, during which time I wrote the piece. The two founding members of “Low and Lower,” Brooks Whitehouse and Paul Sharpe, chose my piece and performed it frequently. As they became more familiar with the work, they began to imagine a string orchestra accompanying them as they played. This sparked a new idea to “reimagine” the piece with string orchestra accompaniment, along with some updated writing to the two solo parts. Please enjoy this brand new version of New Birth, in its optimal form, for cello, string bass, and string orchestra.
