In Unity (Grade 2) - Concert Band
Description from Alfred Publishing:
Evoke images of togetherness, peace, and a true sense of unity with this inspirational piece. Stirring melodic lines lyrically enter and combine, culminating with upper woodwinds and trumpet playing in unison as they literally unite for a climactic conclusion.
New Music Review in The Instrumentalist December 2017:
Intended to evoke images of togetherness, peace, and a sense that we are one as humankind, this inspiring work explores the full sonority of the band. The composition begins softly and expressively with a passage for brass and saxophones followed by a woodwinds-only statement. During a full ensemble section the dynamic level increases; an effective key change then introduces a slightly faster section featuring uplifting melodic material accompanied by repeated legato eighth notes and martial percussion. The intensity builds to a final maestoso as unity becomes evident when the trumpets and upper woodwinds play a unison line before the piece moves to a dramatic conclusion. Percussion writing for six players includes bells, xylophone, snare drum, bass drum, suspended cymbal, crash cymbals, tambourine, and timpani. Requiring expressive playing and close observance of articulation and dynamic markings, the piece is well-suited for demonstrating emerging musicality and is an engaging work appropriate for concert or contest programming.
